MEMPHIS – Facing a ranked foe for the first time this season, the Houston soccer team fell 1-0 to the No.19 Memphis Tigers at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer/Track & Field Complex on Sunday.
Houston (3-2-1, 0-2-0 AAC) held strong against offensive pressure for most of the match, but a first minute goal for Memphis (4-1-0, 3-0-0 AAC) proved enough to last the entirety of the contest. Claire Abrey scored the goal for Memphis off a Mya Jones assist.
Withstanding 13 total shots and six corner kicks, defender Emma Clarke and goalkeeper Salma Ghazal led the backline in the defensive third of the field. Clarke once again played all 90 minutes while Ghazal made another two saves on the day, bringing her season total up to 11. In Ghazal's 475 minutes this season the Cougars have surrendered only three goals.
As a team, the Red and White mustered five shots, led by Adriana Hutson with a pair. Jazmin Grant, Caitlyn Matthews, and Maddie Bowers each tallied one shot. Three of the team's shots came after halftime while two were in the first half.
The Cougars' best chance of the first stanza came when Madison Bowers forced a turnover by the Memphis backline and found herself alone against the Tigers' goalkeeper. Bowers raced into the box and fired off shot, but the Memphis keeper was able to stop the attempt.
In the 59th minute the Tigers earned a penalty kick after a Cassidy Formanek foul, but were unable to convert as Memphis' Tanya Boychuck struck the post and the Cougars ushered the ball away from danger.
UP NEXT
Houston has a week off before returning home on Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. CT against Tulsa. The conference home opener will also be the program's 2021 Senior Day.
