MESA, Ariz. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard shot a 3-under 69 to lead the Cougars during the First Round of the Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club on Friday morning.
Fredgaard, who was named to the Watch List for the Annika Award – presented to the nation's top collegiate female golfer – earlier in the day, tied for the team lead with four birdies in the opening round and only one bogey on the 6,184-yard, par-72 layout.
She was joined among the Top-10 leaders by freshman Anne Normann, who fired a 2-under 70, while senior Ariana Saenz was tied for 14th at 72.
As a team, the Cougars stood in third with a score of 2-under 286. Arizona held the First-Round lead at 281, while UNLV was in second at 283. Following the Cougars, Arizona State (288) and Grand Canyon (295) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
UNLV's Elina Saksa held the First-Round lead with a 66, while Arizona's YuSang Hou stood in second with a 68.
Starting the day off No. 10, Fredgaard made par on her first two holes before suffering a bogey on the par-4 12th hole. Fortunately, that would be the lone blemish on her scorecard for the day.
Fredgaard return to even par with her first birdie of the round on No. 14 and, after six straight pars, drained two birdies in a three-hole stretch on Nos. 3-5. After three more pars, she capped her day with her final birdie on the par-5 ninth hole.
She joined Linn Grant (Arizona State), Ivy Shepherd (Clemson) and Alessandra Fanali (Arizona State) in a tie for third.
Normann overcame her own bogey on No. 12 with birdies on No. 13 and No. 15. After three more pars, the Rungsted, Denmark, native opened her back nine with a birdie on the par-5 first hole.
Despite two bogeys in her next five holes, Normann rallied with a birdie on her final hole of the day and joined Samantha Fuller (UNLV), Alexandra Forsterling (Arizona State) and Maya Benita (Arizona) in a group at 70.
Saenz rallied from a tough start which saw her at +3 through her first five holes. The Porter, Texas, native made her first birdie on the par-5 15th hole and added two more birdies on No. 2 and No. 4.
Following four more pars, Saenz ended the day with a birdie on No. 9 and joined XX others in a tie for 14th at 72.
Junior Annie Kim was tied for 33rd with a 75, while freshman Delaney Martinez was tied for 50th at 77.
