Gasser, Rivas honored for weekend performance
HOUSTON – The University of Houston swept American Athletic Conference weekly honors as junior Steven Rivas was named Player of the Week and junior Robert Gasser was tabbed Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Rivas led The American in five offensive categories on the weekend including home runs (2), doubles (4), slugging (1.700), runs (7) and total bases (17). The outfielder accounted for five RBIs in three games and reached base 11 times, scoring seven runs.

The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native contributed a team-best four doubles and 17 total bases while notching three multi-hit games and three runs in consecutive games.

Gasser permitted just one hit in 5.0 innings to earn the Opening Day win. The southpaw held Texas Southern hitters to 1-for-16 (.063) including 0-for-6 (.000) with runners aboard. His .063 opponent average ranks second in AAC behind only teammate Layne Looney. The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native struck out a career high seven batters alongside just one walk.

Houston swept Texas Southern on the weekend, outscoring the Tigers, 30-9. The Cougars batted .354 as a team highlighted by 10 doubles, five home runs and 60 total bases. Cougar pitching limited Texas Southern to a .183 average (17-for-93) alongside a 2.33 ERA.
