Sophomore middle blocker averaged 2.12 blocks per set
HOUSTON – After helping lead the University of Houston Volleyball team to an undefeated week, sophomore middle blocker Rachel Tullos was named The American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
On the week, Tullos guided Houston's front line, leading the Cougars to a 2-0 record on the road, having averaged 2.12 blocks per set. In her eight sets played, the Lantana, Texas, native totaled 17 blocks, a mark that led the conference.
Â
Tullos began the week posting seven blocks in the sweep against SMU, then followed that performance with another 10 stops, which included three solo blocks. It marked the fifth time in her career she has recorded double-digit blocks in a single match.
Â
The award marks the second of Tullos' career and is the second weekly honor of the season for the Cougars, who also saw sophomore outside hitter Abbie Jackson land a spot on this week's Honor Roll for the second time as well.
Â
Jackson averaged more kills per set (5.75) than any other player in The American and posted a career-high 32 kills in Houston's five-set win over SMU. On the year, Jackson ranks second in the conference with 4.48 kills per set.
Â
Up next, Houston returns to the Athletics/Alumni Center to host Tulane Feb. 18-19. First serve for the match on Thursday is slated for 6 p.m., with a 2 p.m. first serve schedule for Friday. Both contests can be viewed on Facebook Live here.
