Cougars log 79% GSR, four programs notch 90% or better
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes continued their academic success on Thursday with the release of the NCAA's Division I graduation success rate data. Houston student-athletes combined to post a 79 percent Graduate Success Rate (GSR).
The NCAA's report reflects a four-year average of freshmen who entered school from 2011-14 and graduated within a six-year period.
"We're extremely proud of our student-athletes for their commitment in the classroom as well as of our coaches and staff for providing the resources necessary for academic achievement," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "We will continue to support our student-athletes and equip them with the tools necessary to graduate from the University of Houston and move on to future successes."
Swimming (90), baseball (91), softball (95) and soccer (96) posted a four-year score of 90 percent or better GSR while women's golf (100) notched a perfect score. Seven of 17 UH sports programs were at a mark of 80 percent or better.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as a measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave their institution while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.
The positive trend of Houston's academic progress continues. In the spring 2021 semester, Houston's 400 student-athletes in 17 programs posted a 3.40 GPA. One-hundred and fourteen student-athletes were named to the Dean's List while 49 student-athletes received degrees in Spring 2021 or Summer 2021.
