Houston ranks No. 19 in coaches' poll, No. 20 in AP Top 25
HOUSTON – Following a 44-37 win over previously undefeated and then-No. 19/16 SMU, Houston returned to the top 25 rankings at No. 19 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 20 in the AP Top 25, announced Sunday.
Houston is making its first appearance in the AP poll since cracking the Top 25 at No. 17 on Oct. 28, 2018, following a 57-36 win against No. 21 South Florida at TDECU Stadium. Sunday marks the 195th overall appearance for Houston in the AP Top 25.
With Saturday's victory against the Mustangs, Houston (7-1 overall, 5-0 The American) ran its win streak to seven consecutive games, the longest streak since winning eight straight from Nov. 27, 2015-Sept. 29, 2016.
Houston has started a season 7-1 or better 11 times in program history with the last coming in 2018. The Cougars' 5-0 start in conference play is its best since 2015 and marks the sixth time in program history Houston has won its first five league games.
In Saturday's win against SMU, Marcus Jones notched a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown with under 30 seconds remaining to give Houston the lead for good. The feat marked just the second time in the last 15 seasons an FBS program logged a go-ahead touchdown on a kickoff return with less than 30 seconds left in regulation.
