Houston drops match to in-state rival SMU in Fight for Molly match
HOUSTON – Junior Abbie Jackson led the match with 19 kills, but the University of Houston volleyball team fell to SMU 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 25-14) on Friday night at the Fertitta Center.
A season-high 920 fans attended the program's #Fight4Molly match, honoring the late Molly Howard Gerwig who passed away early Friday morning. Howard Gerwig was an assistant coach at Houston Baptist and wife of Houston volleyball assistant coach Brian Gerwig.
Jackson's 19 kills and 20 digs pushed her double-double total for the season to seven this season and 14 for her career. The 20 digs is a new career-high for Jackson. Sophomore Annie Cooke posted a double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs and junior Celeste Darling had a season-best nine kills and .304 attack percentage on the night.
Houston hit .368 in the first set but fell 25-22 due to SMU's .381 attacking clip in the same set. SMU's Jamison Wheeler had seven kills in the set.
The Mustangs ran out to a 2-0 set lead after taking the second set 25-18, holding the Cougars to a .061 attacking percentage in the set.
Houston looked to have switched the momentum in their favor with a commanding third set win, 25-16, behind six kills from Jackson and a pair of late aces from sophomore Grayson Schirpik.
However, the Mustangs came out of the gate in the fourth set on fire, hitting .405 in the set with 17 kills, taking the set and the match 25-14 in the fourth.
