Houston hurler on Cardinals' NL Wild Card Series roster
HOUSTON – Former Houston Baseball student-athlete Daniel Ponce de Leon will represent the Cougars in the Major League Baseball postseason as the right-hander was named to the St. Louis Cardinals postseason roster Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was hot down the stretch, limiting opponents to a .178 average in 20.0 innings during September. In that timeframe, the La Mirada, California, native posted a 3.15 ERA and 28-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He made nine appearances and eight starts in the regular season.
Ponce de Leon was one of five Houston pitchers to appear in a 2020 Major League regular season game, a mark that is tied for the most in Texas among Division I programs. It is also the most for Houston since boasting six in 2013. Four Cougars made MLB debuts in 2020, the most in single-season program history.
The Cardinals open the best-of-three National League Wild Card Series on Wednesday at 4:08 p.m. CT at San Diego on ESPN2. First pitch has not been set for Thursday's middle game (ESPN) or Friday's if-necessary finale (ESPN).
