Cougar duo shine in Texas Collegiate League
HOUSTON – Current Houston Baseball junior first baseman Ryan Hernandez has been named the Texas Collegiate League's Player of the Year after leading its 10 teams in a variety of offensive categories.
Â
Hernandez, who played over the summer for the Round Rock Hairy Men, paced the league in batting average (.364), doubles (9) and home runs (6). The Brookline, Massachusetts, native also finished third in runs scored (26), fourth in RBIs (24) and fifth in hits (32).
Â
The slugger, who led the Cougars with five home runs during the shortened NCAA season, combined to hit five home runs in six games from July 2-9 with Round Rock, collecting 10 RBIs in that span. He was named the TCL Player of the Week for June 29-July 6 thanks in part to the barrage of home runs.
Â
Teammate Dylan Post was also recognized on the All-Texas Collegiate Baseball League Team at designated hitter. The freshman reached base in all 19 games he appeared in for a total of 36 times across 75 plate appearances. The New Lenox, Illinois, native finished the season with a .306 batting average (19-for-62) to go along with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and four RBIs.
Â
Award winners were nominated by their respective teams and then voted on by the coaching staffs of each team in the Texas Collegiate League.
