
UH to Serve as Alternate Training Site for the Astros

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Athletics Department and the Houston Astros announced Monday that Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park will serve as the franchise's alternate training site for spring training.Â

The Astros will train and participate in workouts at the facility as the franchise begins preparations for its upcoming season.
Â
In an effort to socially distance its players and staff, the franchise will alternate workouts between Minute Maid Park and Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park on a daily basis. The club will utilize UH's facilities from July 2-24.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to host the Houston Astros at our baseball facilities during July," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park along with our Baseball Player Development Center rank among the best facilities in college baseball and with our close proximity to Minute Maid Park, we are glad that we could provide another training site for the Astros as they getting ready to start their season."

One of the nation's top college baseball stadiums, Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park saw its most recent renovation in 2013. The stadium saw its biggest structural upgrade as FieldTurf was added as the playing surface prior to the 2014 season. The facility has hosted four NCAA Regionals along with a NCAA Super Regional in 2000.

The Astros will also have access to train in state-of-the-art Houston Baseball Player Development Center, which officially opened in January 2020. The 20,645 square-foot facility, which features a weight room, agility field, club house, batting cages and bullpens, is among one of the nation's top player development centers according to Baseball America. Â

"Our Major League staff was extremely impressed by it," stated Astros general manager James Click. "We're fortunate to have the UH campus in such close proximity to Minute Maid Park and to have a facility which will allow us to continue to focus on our top priority – the safety of our players and staff – while also providing our players every advantage as they get ready to compete for a championship in 2020. I would like to thank Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman, Deputy AD David Tagliarino, and Coach Todd Whitting for accommodating us. We are very excited to call UH our 2020 alternate spring training home."

Known for its fan-friendly atmosphere and spacious accommodations, Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park is the proud home of the University of Houston Baseball team. Reconstructed on February 22, 1995 and recently renovated with the installation of FieldTurf, the facility has become one of the nation's top college baseball stadiums. Adjacent to Schroeder Park down the third base line, Houston Baseball's new Player Development Center and Clubhouse provides student-athletes a comfortable working environment that will feature all the necessary amenities to enhance the success of each individual on and off the field.
