Return of student-athletes is a part of phased approach
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Athletics Department announced on Friday that a portion of student-athletes from football and men's and women's basketball will be allowed to return to campus on June 1 to participate in voluntary athletic activities.
Student-athletes from other sports will arrive on campus throughout the summer in a phased approach. Upon their return to Houston, student-athletes will be evaluated for clearance by the UH sports medicine staff. These student-athletes will be monitored daily and expected to adhere to an abundance of health and safety protocols.
"Our executive staff has worked closely with university administration, medical professionals and our coaching staffs to develop a detailed and comprehensive plan for the return of our student-athletes to campus," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "The health of our student-athletes and staff will continue to be our top priority as we implement this phased approach."
Under the first phase, student-athletes from football, men's basketball and women's basketball will be allowed to arrive on campus on June 1. Two UH facilities – the Athletics/Alumni Center and the Guy V. Lewis Player Development Center would be available for limited occupancy during the first phase.
Houston Athletics has put into place several operation measures to minimize the risk and potential spread of the COVID-19 virus. Student-athletes and staff will be required to enter and exit facilities through the use of designated entrances, wear masks that will be provided at entry, take part in daily temperature checks, practice physical distancing and use hand sanitizer/gloves when applicable.
Measures have been put into place by UH's sports medicine staff in the event of a positive test for COVID-19 by a student-athlete or staff member.
NCAA regulations will permit only strength and conditioning personnel to supervise voluntary on-campus athletics activities through the month of June. Organized practices remain prohibited by the NCAA in all sports.
In this phased plan, a majority of athletics department personnel will continue to telecommute.
Houston will continue to monitor and evaluate policies on physical spacing, contact tracing, testing and other safety requirements as more information is made available from the CDC, state and local officials, the American Athletic Conference and the NCAA.
