Six Cougars Punch Tickets to NCAA Indoor Championships

Cougars to be well represented at NCAA’s
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program will continue its indoor season at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, sending six student-athletes to Albuquerque, N.M. for the meet that will take place from March 13-14.

Travis Collins, Dayo Akindele, Antonio Ruiz, Tristan Evelyn, Naomi Taylor and Taylor Scaife are all set to compete at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Taylor Scaife will make her second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance in the Weight Throw, entering the field with the third best toss in the NCAA this season at 22.89m (75-01.25). Scaife earned an emphatic third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season with her best throw coming on her final attempt.

Naomi Taylor will make her second straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles after claiming her second conference title in the event last weekend. Taylor enters the competition with the seventh-fastest time among collegians this season at 8.03.

Tristan Evelyn will look to maintain her momentum after claiming a pair of conference titles last weekend at The American Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 60-meters and 200-meter dash. Evelyn punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships last weekend with a time of 23.16 in the 200-meters, entering the meet with the 11th-fastest time in the NCAA this season.

Travis Collins will advance to the NCAA Championships after posting a lifetime best 6.61 in the 60-meters at The American Athletic Conference Championships. The time marks the fifth-fastest time in program history and is currently the 10th-fastest time in the NCAA this season.

Dayo Akindele has come in and had a stellar season senior for the Cougars, clocking the fourth fastest time in program history at The American Championships. Akindele will enter the Championships with the 14th-fastest time in the NCAA this season at 7.73.

Antonio Ruiz has helped rejuvenate the Houston Pole Vault personnel, shattering the meet record just two weeks ago at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational. Ruiz enters the meet with the 10th-best mark in the NCAA this season at 5.50m (18-05.00).
