Sophomore catcher earns first weekly honor of her career
HOUSTON – University of Houston Softball sophomore catcher Kati Ray Brown was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. The award is the first of her career and the third weekly honor for the Cougars this season.
Brown led the Cougars to a 4-1 record on the week, having played an intricate part during the team's 11-game winning streak. In five games, the Sugar Land, Texas, native bolstered a .583 batting average, posted a 1.333 slugging percentage and launched three home runs, extending her conference lead to nine this season.
In Houston's first matchup with UTEP, Brown set a career-high with four RBIs in the game, as her 2-for-2 performance paced the Cougars to their season-high 14-run outburst. Brown followed that outing the next day and tied her career-high four RBIs with one swing of the bat with the first grand slam of her career.
Against UNLV, Brown connected on her third home run of the weekend to not only stretch her conference lead in the category but to also extend Houston's six-game home run streak, a mark that had not been reached since 2014. Brown capped the weekend with her third multiple-hit performance, collecting a pair of hits in the contest with New Mexico State.
This year, Brown has recorded nine home runs, a mark that sits atop The American and is tied for fourth in the country. Her .939 slugging percentage is also best in the conference and ranks 16th in the nation.
