THE WOODLANDS, Texas – University of Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard was tied for eighth at even-par 144 to lead the Cougars during the first day of the ICON Invitational on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club.
Fredgaard opened the Cougars' home tournament with a 71 on the 6,392-yard course and followed with a 73 in the afternoon session.
After starting the day with a bogey on No. 2 in the morning session, Fredgaard sank six straight pars before returning to even par with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole. The Asserbo, Denmark, native endured another bogey on No. 12 but regained that stroke with a birdie on the par-5 13th hole and added her final birdie of the opening round on No. 17.
As a team, the Cougars stood in sixth with a score of 585 against a field, which features six of the nation's Top 40 programs.
No. 5 Kent State and Purdue were tied for the first-day lead at 577, while TCU was in third at 578. No. 1 Texas stood in fourth at 579 with No. 37 Texas A&M in fifth at 585. North Texas (586), Tulsa (589), No. 23 Texas Tech (589) and No. 20 Virginia Tech (594) rounded out the Top 10.
Texas' Sophie Guo finished the first day at 4-under 140 to finish two shots ahead of Sabrina Iqbal (TCU), Lorena Tseng (Tulsa), No. 48 Emily Mahar (Virginia Tech) and Sifat Sagoo (Purdue).
Houston sophomore Annie Kim joined Fredgaard among the Top-20 individual leaders at 146. Sophomore Maria Jose Martinez stood in 34th at 148, while junior Ariana Saenz and senior Brooke McDougald were tied for 43rd at 150.
Playing as an individual, senior Amanda Elich was tied for 64th at 154.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas and Texas A&M, beginning with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
Fredgaard begins off No. 4 with Kim (No. 5), Saenz (first group off No. 6), Martinez (second group off No. 6) and McDougald (second group off No. 7) following. Elich will be in the first group off No. 15.

UP NEXT
Following the ICON Invitational, the Cougars head west to compete at the Clover Cup on March 13-15 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
From there, the team will tee off at the Evans Derby Experience, hosted by Auburn at Auburn University Club on March 27-29.
