Cougars match program record with three representatives
HOUSTON – Three University of Houston student-athletes and team captains have accepted invitations to The Reese's Senior Bowl, set for Jan. 30, 2021 in Mobile, Ala.
Wide receiver Marquez Stevenson, linebacker Grant Stuard and defensive lineman Payton Turner will represent the Cougars in the postseason all-star game which showcases the nation's top NFL Draft prospects. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will air on the NFL Network.
The trio ups Houston's total to 38 student-athletes who have accepted invites to the Reese's Senior Bowl. The three accepted invites match the most in school history and are the most since the 1997 contest which featured defensive back Delmonico Montgomery, running back Antowain Smith and offensive tackle Marcus Spriggs.
Stevenson ranks third among active FBS players with three career kickoff return touchdowns. The Shreveport, La., native also ranks ninth among FBS receivers with 2,240 career yards. His 21 career receiving touchdowns are eighth-most in program history. Stevenson was named to the American Athletic Conference First Team for a second straight season in 2019, finishing with 52 receptions and nine touchdowns.
Stuard leads Houston's defense with 50 tackles this season and ranks third in The American with 8.3 tackles per game. Against UCF, the Conroe, Texas, native logged nine tackles and provided a 34-yard scoop-and-score touchdown. In 2019, he led Houston with 93 tackles, including 9.5 for loss.
In 38 career games, Turner owns 114 tackles and 24 tackles for loss. The Houston native made 11 starts a year ago and finished with 34 tackles, 4.0 sacks and 8.0 tackles for loss in 2019. Turner was named to The American's Weekly Honor Roll in Week 6, providing seven tackles, including 4.5 for loss and two seasons, in Houston's 49-31 victory against Tulane.
