Softball, tennis and women’s golf programs record perfect score
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes continued their academic success on Tuesday with the release of the NCAA's Division I graduation success rate data. Houston student-athletes combined to match the department's record with an 81 percent Graduate Success Rate (GSR).
Â
Over the last seven years, Houston has dramatically increased its GSR with an 18-percent increase among its graduating scholarship student-athletes. The NCAA's report reflects a four-year average of freshmen who entered school from 2010-13 and graduated within a six-year period.
Â
"We're very proud of the commitment that our student-athletes have shown to completing their degrees and setting themselves up for success in life," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman. "We will continue to support our student-athletes as they prepare themselves for a life after athletics and we are excited that our positive academic progress continues. While our athletics department is proud of our most recent academic success, there is still more work to be done and we look forward to our future progress in the classroom."
Â
Three programs posted a perfect score and nine of 17 UH sports programs in the report posted an 80 percent or better GSR.
Â
Softball, tennis and women's golf all logged 100 percent perfect GSR scores. Houston's baseball and swimming and diving teams recorded four-year GSR rates of over 90 percent.
Â
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as a measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation.
Â
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave their institution while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.
Â
The positive trend of Houston's academic progress continues. In the spring 2020 semester, Houston's 400 student-athletes in 17 programs posted a school-record 3.43 GPA. One-hundred and fourteen student-athletes were named to the Dean's List in the spring 2020 semester.
