Houston duo recognized by league for efforts in win
HOUSTON – Houston junior cornerback Marcus Jones was named The American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Jones recorded the first true punt return touchdown in TDECU Stadium history on a 72-yard return for a score in the third quarter against USF on Saturday. It was also the first true punt return in a home game since Charles West returned an 87-yard punt against Southern Miss (Nov. 9, 1996).
The Enterprise, Ala., native, who returned four punts for 145 yards against the Bulls, ranks fourth nationally and first in The American this season with 21.6 yards per return. His 72-yard return was the ninth-longest in Houston history helped the Cougars to a 56-point outburst, the highest point total in the Dana Holgorsen era.
Meanwhile, junior quarterback Clayton Tune was recognized on The American's Honor Roll. The signal caller completed 14-of-25 passes for 163 yards, while throwing for a season-high three touchdowns. On the ground, Tune led UH with 120 yards and scored twice, marking the first time in his career he rushed for multiple touchdowns in a single game.
Houston looks to continue its momentum when it returns to action at 11 a.m. CT Saturday at SMU. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and can be heard on KPRC 950 AM with the pregame show hosted by Matt Thomas airing one hour prior to kickoff. Fans can also listen to the game through the TuneIn app.
