Senior kicker matches school record in conference victory
HOUSTON – Houston senior kicker Dalton Witherspoon was named The American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The Moore, Okla., native drilled all three of his field goal attempts, including a school-record-tying 53-yard effort to move the Cougars to within 7-6 in the first quarter, and all four PAT tries. Witherspoon joined Dustin Bell (at Southern Miss, Oct. 7, 2004) and Roman Anderson (at Texas A&M, Oct. 26, 1991) as the only Houston kickers to boot 53-yard field goals.
Houston senior wide receiver Marquez Stevenson was also named to The American's Honor Roll. It marked the second time in three outings the Shreveport, Louisiana, native has been recognized by the league with the first coming after the opener against Tulane.
Stevenson hauled in nine passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, moving into eighth in Houston program history with his 20th and 21st career touchdown receptions. His third career 100-yard receiving performance against Navy was highlighted by a 51-yard score to put Houston ahead for good in the second quarter.
The Cougars return to action Saturday as they host UCF inside TDECU Stadium on ESPN Plus. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT. Tickets are available here.
