« The UH offense returns 91.2 percent of its 2018 rushing yards, 99.8 percent of its passing yards, 82.3 percent of its receiving yards and 85.3 percent of its scoring. The Cougars have plenty of experience on that side of the ball with three players owning at least 19 career starts: offensive lineman Josh Jones (40 career starts), offensive lineman Braylon Jones (34) and offensive lineman Jarrid Williams (20).
« The Cougar defense has recorded at least one takeaway in 21 straight games, the longest active streak in the country. Since 2013, Houston has recorded 103 interceptions, the most of any team in the country. Only two other teams have recorded at least 100 interceptions since 2013 is Ohio State (102) and Louisiana Tech (100).

The Cougars now enter a stretch where they will play just one game in the next 22 days. After Saturday's matchup at North Texas, Houston returns to action on Oct. 12 inside TDECU Stadium as it takes on Cincinnati.
« North Texas moved to 2-2 after defeating UTSA, 45-3, in its Conference USA opener inside Apogee Stadium. Quarterback Mason Fine threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Tre Siggers scored twice and finished with 143 rushing yards in the win over the Roadrunners.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
« The Air Raid reunion continues for Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen as he faces another former colleague. North Texas head coach Seth Littrell served as the running backs coach at Texas Tech from 2005-08, spending three seasons with Holgorsen as assistants in Lubbock. Littrell has guided North Texas to back-to-back nine-win seasons and three consecutive bowl appearances.
« Houston played in the inaugural game against North Texas at Apogee Stadium in 2011. Justin Johnson (Houston's running backs coach) picked up two touchdown receptions in the 48-23 victory over the Mean Green. Case Keenum tossed five touchdown passes and finished with 458 yards through the air.
« Junior nickel back Grant Stuard continues to lead the Cougars and is second in The American with 33 total tackles this year. Stuard split time a year ago at safety and also saw action at running back for Houston in 2018.
« Houston has scored at least 30 points in 15 out of its last 17 games dating back to the beginning of the 2018 season. The Cougars have also scored in 240 consecutive games dating back to Sept. 30, 2000.

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS
« North Texas is 2-2 this season after defeating UTSA, 45-3, last Saturday inside Apogee Stadium.
« North Texas is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Seth Littrell, who is 25-19 with the Mean Green. Under Littrell, North Texas has won at least nine games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1977-78 and appeared in three straight bowl games. Littrell's Air Raid ties began during his playing career at Oklahoma, where he helped the Sooners to the 2000 national title, and during a four-year stint at Texas Tech as running backs coach. Littrell took over as head coach North Texas after spending two seasons at North Carolina as the assistant head coach for offense.
« Offensively, North Texas ranks second in C-USA in scoring offense (35.0) and total offense (450.3) this season. The Mean Green are led by senior quarterback Mason Fine, who has thrown for nine touchdowns and completed 61.8 percent of his passes. « Sims surpassed the 200-yard barrier for the second time in his career on 20 carries with a rushing and receiving touchdown. He became only the seventh player in school history with multiple 200-yard rushing games during his outstanding career.
« Redshirt freshman Kenneth Farrow also notched a career best with 85 yards on only eight touches (10.6 yards per carry). Piland finished 31-of-41 with 321 passing yards, while Dewayne Peace logged nine catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. GAME 4 RECAP: NORTH TEXAS
« University of Houston senior quarterback D'Eriq King set a Football Bowl Subdivision record with rushing and passing touchdowns in his 15th consecutive game, but it would not be enough as Tulane claimed a 38-31 win over the Cougars inside Yulman Stadium.
« King threw for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16-of-33 passing and added another 116 rushing yards and touchdown on the ground. With his scores, he topped Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's previous record.
« The Cougars wasted little time in putting their mark on the scoreboard. Receiving the opening kickoff on a touchback, King rolled to his right and hit Marquez Stevenson for a 75-yard touchdown strike on the Cougars' first play from scrimmage.
« The Cougars jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first half before Tulane rallied to take a 31-28 lead in the fourth quarter. Houston tied the game at 31-31 with 21 seconds remaining, and the game appeared heading to overtime. However, Tulane's Jalen McCleskey's 53-yard touchdown reception from Justin McMillan with just three seconds remaining gave the Green Wave the win.

THE LINE ON THE LINE
« For the fourth straight year, a new offensive line coach has stepped in with options across the front as Brandon Jones will oversee a group that has a combined 82 career starts and 156 career games played from last season, although it will look to replace two day-to-day starters in center Will Noble, a four-year starter, and left guard Mason Denley.
« Senior tackle Josh Jones leads the way with 40 career starts, having stepped into the left tackle role in the 2016 opener and never looking back. Senior Braylon Jones make the move to center after starting every game the last two seasons (25) at right guard and has 34 career starts in total.

FOREMEN
« Switching from a three-man front to a four-man front, Houston will essentially be looking for three new starting defensive linemen in 2019 with junior defensive end Payton Turner the lone returning day-to-day starter from 2018, starting the first 11 games of the season before a season-ending injury.
« The top tackler among returning defensive linemen, Turner finished his sophomore campaign with 42 stops including 4.5 tackles for loss while breaking up four passes and blocking one kick.

« Oliver's injury also allowed for additional playing time for senior Blake Young who saw action in 10 games including action in each of the final eight. Young has started the first two games for the Cougars at defensive tackle.
« Logan Hall played in all 13 games, starting the Armed Forces Bowl versus Army, and finishing the year with 14 tackles including three for a loss.
« Houston has added bodies to the competition in the spring with junior college transfers Taures Payne and Olivier Charles-Pierre.
SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL
« Just as the numbers along the line has changed, the same will be true for the linebackers in 2019 switching from four starting linebackers to three, which comes after losing three of four starting linebackers from the 2018 team including NFL Combine invitee Emeke Egbule and a member of The American's All-Conference First Team in Austin Robinson.

« Houston also added another face to the linebackers room in the spring in junior college transfer Terrance Edgeston. Edgeston has started three games for the Cougars at WILL linebacker so far this season.
STRENGTH AND SAFETY
« It is a tale of two positions in the secondary as Houston returns its starting safeties in juniors Deontay Anderson and Gleson Sprewell after losing its top three corners with a combined 41 career starts in a Houston uniform.
« After stepping into the starting lineup in the fourth game of 2018, Sprewell finished third on the Houston team, and leads all returning tacklers, with 81 total stops.
« After picking off his first pass against Tulane, Sprewell doubled it up in the next game, picking off two Memphis passes, one he returned 63 yards for a Houston touchdown, his second defensive touchdown of the year.

« At corner, Houston lost Alexander Myres (18 games started at Houston), NFL Combine invitee Isaiah Johnson (12) and Nick Watkins (eight games in lone season at Houston) and will now look to retool the position in 2019.
« One name that will be given an opportunity to make an impact right away will be junior college transfer Damarion Williams who earned NJCAA First Team All-America honors in 2018 at Highland Community College where he led the nation with seven interceptions and 17 pass breakups in 10 games.
« Houston has four corners who have seen action for the program led by senior Ka'Darian Smith (29 career games played), junior Javian Smith (20), sophomore Shaun Lewis (15) and junior D.J. Small (10).

« Witherspoon nailed a career-long 46-yard field goal against Prairie View A&M. The junior finished 3-for-3 against the Panthers, becoming the first UH kicker to make at least three field goals in one game since 2016 (Ty Cummings, Memphis).
