Senior libero averaged 5.94 digs per set in four matches
HOUSTON – For the first time in her career, University of Houston Volleyball senior libero Katie Karbo was named The American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The award comes two weeks after freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson earned The American Offensive Player of the Week, marking the first time since 2015 the Cougars have received multiple conference weekly accolades in the same season. Karbo is also the first Houston player to receive a Defensive Player of the Week honor from the conference since Olivia O'Dell (Oct. 19) in 2015.
Over the course of four matches, Karbo totaled 107 digs, averaging 5.94 digs per set in her 18 sets played. In those four contests, the Azle, Texas, product surpassed the 20-dig mark all four times, eclipsing 30 digs twice.
The week also saw Karbo put together multiple career performances, the first being on Saturday against UTEP, where she became the third player in program history to surpass the 2,000-dig plateau in a career. Later that day, Karbo tied a career high with 35 digs in the five-set thrilling win over Incarnate Word.
As a result of her performances at the Red Raider Classic, Karbo was named to the All-Tournament Team. In Houston's three matchups in Lubbock, Karbo averaged 5.43 digs per set, totalling 76 digs in 14 sets played. It's the third time this season Karbo was named to an All-Tournament team.
