Houston Hosts Rice in Exhibition Contest

Cougars begin new era of Houston Volleyball
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team and first-year Head Coach David Rehr host Rice for an exhibition match on Friday inside the Fertitta Center. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.

For Houston, this will be its first contest played inside the $60-million area. The Cougars will play on a Taraflex floor that sits on top of the basketball court, giving volleyball fans an unparalleled experience.

The arena is also equipped with a 4,500-square-foot space near the court that houses the team's locker room, players' lounge, nutrition center and satellite sports medicine room. This past offseason, the Cougars also completed the installation of new training floors that consists of three practices courts, covering nearly 18,00-square-feet.

Rehr is the sixth head coach in the Cougars' history. In his 20-year career as a head coach, he has transformed both two- and four-year programs, having won three tournament titles and two national championships.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
NEW GAMEDAY PROCEDURES
Those looking to watch the Cougars in action in 2019 are now advised to park in the Stadium Garage on Holman Street as well as Lot 16B on the southeast corner of Elgin and Cullen in front of Moore's School of Music.

Fans can park in both areas for $5, which will be open two hours before first serve. On days where other events are occurring on campus, $5 parking lots will still be available at locations to be determined later.

To enter the Fertitta Center, doors will only be open at the Holman Street entrances, where fans can purchase single-game tickets for as low as $5. Fans can buy tickets in advance now by either clicking here or calling (713) GO-COOGS.

Along with the list of prohibited items, also new to Houston Volleyball fans in 2019 is a Clear Bag Policy, which is being incorporated to help provide a safer environment for the public and to expedite fan entry into the Fertitta Center. The UH Clear Bag Policy strictly limits the size and types of bags that are permitted into the Fertitta Center.

Items such as backpacks, large bags and diaper bags are not permitted. Fans are strongly encouraged to not bring any bags. However, the following will be permitted:

- Admission to Friday's exhibition is free of charge.
- Houston returns 12 players from its 2018 squad.
- Comprised of eight freshmen and two transfers, the Cougars have 10 new faces on the 2019 team.
- Sophomore libero Torrie Frederick comes to Houston after leading Clemson last season in digs (350) and digs per set (2.71).
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Senior libero Katie Karbo returns after a standout 2018 campaign, leading the team with 659 digs, which ranked amongst the best in the country at No. 13.
- Senior outside hitter Megan Duncan led the team's offense in three categories last season: total kills (356), kills per set (2.92) and service aces (31).
- Junior setter Abby Irvine posted a team-high 775 assists last year and averaged 6.30 helpers per set, which ranked 11th in the conference.

- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12"
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
- A small clutch purse no larger than 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap. These small clutches are subject to search.
- An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at the entrance by arena personnel.
