Jefferson Takes Second-Place at NCAA Championships

Cougar jumper earns second-place finish in men’s long jump
AUSTIN – The University of Houston Track & Field concluded the opening day of action with eight team points after senior Trumaine Jefferson earned a second-place finish in the men's long jump. Four Cougar men will advance to the finals in five events.
ABOUT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships will be held in Austin, Texas at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. Competition will run from June 5-8 and will be aired on the ESPN family of channels (ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN2, ESPN3). Live results and heat sheets can be found HERE. HOW IT HAPPENED
Jefferson would put the Cougars on the board with a lifetime-best leap of 26-10 (8.18m) on his second attempt. The senior bested his previous lifetime of 26-1.5 (7.96m), surpassing the eight-meter mark for the first time. The mark is the now the leading mark in American Athletic Conference history and the third-best mark in program history behind Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell. Jefferson will conclude his Houston career with second-place honors in the long jump at both the 2019 Indoor and Outdoor Championships, to go along with five American Athletic Conference podium finishes in the long jump, including three conference titles in the event across Indoor and Outdoor.
On the track, the men's team put itself in good position heading into Friday's finals. Amere Lattin got things going for the Cougars qualifying for the finals of both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Lattin closed out the 110 hurdles with a fifth-place overall finish in the semifinal of the event with a lifetime best 13.44, taking second-place in his heat.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Lattin will advance with a time of 49.95 and ninth-place overall finish. The senior finished first in his heat. Quivell Jordan finished right outside the top-eight in ninth-place with a time of 50.37.
In the 100-meter dash, Mario Burke scorched the track with a wind-legal 9.98 to take third-place overall and first-place in his heat. The time marks a lifetime best for Burke and is the third-fastest time in program history. Burke was not done yet as he qualified for the final of the 200-meter dash with a lifetime best 20.08 and second-place overall finish. The time marks the third-fastest in program history,
The 400-meter dash finals will be highlighted by a pair of Cougars as Kahmari Montgomery and Obi Igbokwe took first and second-place in their heat. Montgomery led the charge for Houston with a first-place overall finish at 44.80, while Igbokwe took fifth-place overall at 45.35 to match his season-best.
In the final event of the day the Cougars posted the fourth-fastest time in program history to advance, taking first-place in their heat and sixth-place overall. Lattin, Jermaine Holt, Frederick Lewis and Igbokwe combined for a time 3:03.78 in the event.

END OF SEASON HAPPY HOUR
