Houston Opens NCAA Championships Wednesday

Cougar men open NCAA Championships action on Wednesday, followed by women Thursday
AUSTIN – The University of Houston Track & Field program will open competition at the 2019 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. DUE TO IMPENDING WEATHER THE MEET SCHEDULE HAS BEEN ADJUSTED. PLEASE SEE INFORMATION BELOW.
ABOUT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships will be held in Austin, Texas at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. Competition will run from June 5-8 and will be aired on the ESPN family of channels (ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN2, ESPN3).Due to weather the Wednesday meet schedule has been adjusted and all running events will be aired on ESPN2 with the first event of the meet beginning at 4:02 p.m. The rest of the broadcast schedule can be found HERE.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
The women's team will be represented in four events, including the 4x100-meter relay for the first time since the 2015 season.
In the field, Samiyah Samuels qualified for the NCAA Championships after posting a fourth-place finish in the long jump at the NCAA West Prelims with a leap of 20-7.75 (6.29). This is Samuels second straight appearance at the NCAA Championships after qualifying in the long jump last season.
Naomi Taylor will be representing the Cougars in the 100-meter hurdles after closing out the West Prelims with a sixth-place finish at 13.23. This will mark Taylor's first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Freshman sprinter Ashley Seymour will make her first NCAA appearance, competing in the 100-meter dash. Seymour concluded the NCAA West Prelims with a lifetime best 11.40 in the 100-meter dash, securing the final qualifying spot in the West.
The women's squad will hit the track for the 4x100-meter relay after advancing out of the West region with a fifth-overall finish with a season-best time of 43.93.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR ON THE MEN'S SIDE
The men's team qualified seven individuals across six events and a 4x400-meter relay squad.
Amere Lattin will kick things off for the Cougars competing in the 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay. The senior is one of two student-athletes to qualify in both of the hurdle events at the NCAA Championships. Lattin took first-place in his heat of the 400-meter hurdles with a lifetime best 49.45 at prelims and finished first-place in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.56 to match his season-best.
Quivell Jordan will join Lattin in the 400-meter hurdles after closing out his heat in fourth-place with a lifetime best time of 50.11.
Mario Burke and Travis Collins will hit the track for the 100-meter dash. Burke advanced to Austin after taking third-place in the quarterfinals at 10.08. Collins will join Burke in Austin after clocking a time of 10.31 to secure a ticket to the national championships.
Burke will be doing double duty while in Austin, as a qualifier in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The senior posted a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash at 20.58 to advance. Kahmari Montgomery will join Burke in the 200-meter dash after posting the fifth-fastest time in program history in the event at 20.35 for a collegiate personal-best.
The 400-meter dash will be highlighted by a pair of Houston entries. Obi Igbokwe and Montgomery will hit the track for the Cougars in the event. Montgomery scorched the track with a program-best 44.78 at the NCAA West Prelims to advance. Igbokwe will join Montgomery and makes his fourth consecutive appearance at the championships and first in a Houston uniform after clocking a tie of 45.35 in Sacramento.
Senior Trumaine Jefferson will look to score for the Cougars in the long jump after turning in a third-place finish at prelims with a leap of 25-6.75 (7.79). This will be Jefferson's second-straight NCAA appearance.
The men's team will hit the track for the 4x400-meter relay to close out the meet, heading into the race with the third-fastest time this season at 3:02.61.
