Houston Cougar supporters join with Department of Athletics ahead of 2019 Football season
HOUSTON – As the University of Houston Football program prepares for a new era under Head Coach Dana Holgorsen, local alumni, friends and program supporters have joined with Houston Athletics in the HOUSTON 713 #TheTimeIsNow campaign to sell season tickets.
Through their own professional and personal networks, HOUSTON 713 committee members are securing support from local Houstonians, business owners and the corporate community by purchasing Houston Football season tickets and becoming supporters of Houston Athletics.
Football season-ticket sales play a critical role in the financial well-being of all NCAA Division I athletics departments. By purchasing season tickets, fans invest and provide necessary financial resources and support for more than 400 Houston Athletic student-athletes across 17 sport programs.
Greg Shoemaker serves as chairman of the Board of Visitors Athletics Task Force along with UH supporter, local business owner and co-chair Craig Jones for the HOUSTON 713 campaign. In their roles, Shoemaker and Jones work with several board chairs and campaign volunteers to help deliver the overall message of Houston Athletics to the greater Houston area while supporting department-wide initiatives throughout the year.
Shoemaker and his family have deep ties to the University. He played baseball for Houston in the 1970s, while his father, Wayne, played Football for the Cougars in the 1950s and was a member of the 1952 Missouri Valley Conference championship team. Greg's wife, Wendy, was a cheerleader during the Cougars' championship days early in the Southwest Conference.
For Shoemaker and his family, the games and Houston Football's home success in recent years are only part of the overall attraction.
"It's getting to see to people I went to school with or have built a relationship through the University, and it's getting the chance to meet folks that we haven't known before," Shoemaker said. "You develop a community with your fellow fans, and you reignite those relationships when you go to Houston Athletics events."
"We are grateful for the leadership and support by Greg and Craig, along with our board chairs and 40-plus active volunteers who are working on the HOUSTON 713 campaign," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "For our student-athletes to have the best collegiate experience, fan support and resources are vital to compete athletically and academically on a national level. We must continue to expand our fan base, and our HOUSTON 713 members are helping us achieve that goal."

ABOUT HOUSTON FOOTBALL
Since opening in 2014, Houston Football has posted a 27-6 (.818) overall record in TDECU Stadium, including a 23-3 (.885) mark in the last four years. The Cougars enjoyed wins over nationally ranked opponents No. 25 Memphis (2015), No. 20 Temple (2015), No. 3 Louisville (2016) and No. 21 USF (2018).
"TDECU Stadium is a beautiful facility," Shoemaker said. "I played high school football games on that site when it was Jeppesen Stadium, so it was a bittersweet feeling when they tore down Robertson Stadium. But the new stadium is just wonderful."
In 2019, Holgorsen returns to lead the Cougars. As Houston's offensive coordinator from 2008 to 2009, Holgorsen guided quarterback Case Keenum and the Houston offense to record-setting numbers that continue to stand today.
Quarterback D'Eriq King returns for his senior season after setting an American Athletic Conference single-season with 50 touchdowns responsible for (36 pass, 14 rush) despite missing nearly three games with injury.
2018-19 SUCCESS
In 2018-19, six Houston sport programs earned American Athletic Conference championships with 12 teams earning NCAA postseason appearances. Six sport programs' head coaches/coaching staffs were honored by the American Athletic Conference.
Houston Men's Basketball advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, while the Men's Track & Field program finished third nationally for the second straight season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
However, the success of Houston Athletics can be found in more than athletics competition. Houston student-athletes achieved a record cumulative GPA following the spring semester for the second time in the last three years in 2019 and saw nearly 70 student-athletes receive their bachelor's degrees.
