Cougars receive national recognition in polls
HOUSTON – Coming off of its most wins since the 2013 season, the University of Houston Softball team found itself receiving votes in both the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll.
The Cougars earned five votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, while they captured four votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll. The appearance in both polls bookends the season for Houston's appearance in the national rankings, as the Cougars found themselves receiving votes in both polls prior to the start of the 2019 campaign.
Houston posted a 39-19 mark in 2019 and a 12-8 record in the American Athletic Conference, which was good enough to finish third in league. Prior to making a run in the NCAA Tournament and competing in the Austin Regional final, Houston landed five players on the All-Conference team, which included the 2019 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Sarah Barker.
Barker, along with senior pitcher/utility Savannah Heebner, each earned a spot on the NFCA All-Region Third Team. On April 15, Heebner became the seventh player in program history to be drafted in the National Pro Fastpitch, when she was selected by the Chicago Bandits with the 24th overall pick in the fifth round.
