Valencia Takes Second at Mexican National Championships

Cougar throwers excelling on international stage
HOUSTON – University of Houston Track & Field senior Felipe Valencia earned a second-place finish at the Mexican Open National Championships on Friday, May 31 in Chihuahua.
After closing out his senior season on the Houston Track & Field team with his third appearance at the NCAA West Prelims and an American Athletic Conference Shot Put title, Valencia made the trip to Mexico for the championships.
Valencia tossed a lifetime best 62-3.75 (18.99) for a second-place finish in the shot put. This is the second time that Valencia has earned a podium finish at the Mexican National Championships after earning a bronze medal in 2018.
As previously reported, freshman Triston Gibbons tossed a lifetime best 58-2 (17.73) at the NCAA West Prelims. The mark bested his previous Barbados shot put record. Gibbons is now both a National and Junior National shot put record holder in the Barbados.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2019 NCAA Track & Field Championships will be held June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. The meet will be aired on the ESPN family of channels and tickets can be purchased by clicking HERE. For all meet information click HERE.
END OF SEASON HAPPY HOUR
The Houston Cougar Track & Field program will host an end of season Happy Hour, June 11 from 6-8 p.m. at BB's Café on Westheimer to celebrate the outstanding success of both the Men and Women's programs during the 2018-19 Indoor and Outdoor seasons.
