James’ Three-Run Home Run Lifts Cougars over Aggies

Houston moves into winners’ bracket in Austin Regional
AUSTIN, Texas – A two-out three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth from junior infielder Arielle James proved to be the difference in Houston's, 3-1, win over Texas A&M on Friday afternoon.
The win marks the second time this season the Cougars (38-17) have defeated the Aggies (28-26), as Houston has now increased its win total every year under third-year Head Coach Kristin Vesely. Friday's victory also improves Houston's record to 26-4 on the year when scoring first.
While James' three RBIs on the day were a game-high, senior outfielders Sarah Barker and Maya Thomas each recorded a game-high two hits. In the circle, senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed her 20th complete game of the season, striking out seven batters and allowing no earned runs to earn her sixth-straight victory.

KEY INNINGS
5th | After senior catcher Brooke Vannoy reached base on a dropped-third-strike, a single up the middle from senior outfielder Sarah Barker put a pair of runners on base for the Cougars. With two out in the inning, junior infielder Arielle James stepped up to the plate and launched a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence to put Houston on top by three runs.
6th | The Aggies fought back to plate a run in the top of the inning, but senior pitcher Savannah Heebner bounced back to retire the side and keep Houston ahead by a pair.
7th | Following a pair of groundouts from the Aggies, Heebner sealed the victory by striking out the final batter she faced, giving Houston the 3-1 win.
