Houston Captures Fourth Straight American OTF Title

Cougar’s earn seven titles on final day
WICHITA, Kan. – The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship title will return to Houston as the men's team earned its fourth straight team title Sunday evening at Cessna Stadium in Wichita, Kansas.
The women's squad held its own, taking home three medals, including a title in the 110-hurdles and posting seven top-five finishes.
For the fourth straight season, Head Coach Leroy Burrell and his staff would take home men's coaching staff of the year honors. Kahmari Montgomery would be honored alongside his teammate Amere Lattin as the men's most outstanding performer. This marks the fourth consecutive year that a Cougar has been recognized as an outstanding performer.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Houston entered the final day of competition in sixth-place with 18 points before Brendon Rivera and Colin George secured the first team points for the Cougars on the final day of action. With a second-place finish in the men's high jump after clearing a season-best 6-11.5 (2.12), Rivera concluded the event with his first American Outdoor Championships podium finish and was trailed by George who finished in fifth-place after clearing 6-8.75 (2.05).
Freshman Triston Gibbons would advance to the finals of the men's discus and secure a sixth-place finish in the event. Gibbons best mark came on his first attempt when he tossed a 165-5 (50.43) for his second top-eight finish of the weekend.
For the sixth consecutive season the men's 4x100-meter relay squad would take home the title. Mario Burke, Nicholas Alexander, Brandon Taylor, and Travis Collins combined for a time of 39.09 to set a new Cessna Stadium record.
The Cougars filled the podium with red after sweeping the 110-meter hurdles. Amere Lattin clinched the top spot and set a meet record in the event after crossing the finish line at 13.56. The time marks a season-best for the senior and is the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season. With the win, Lattin becomes the first athlete in The American to be a four-time champion in a single event. In second-place, Devion Wilson ran a lifetime best 13.96, earning his first conference outdoor podium finish. Quivell Jordan walked away with a third-place finish at 14.12 to complete the sweep for Houston.
The men's 400-meter dash featured four Cougars, as Kahmari Montgomery defended his title and clinched a first-place finish. Montgomery finished at 46.10 and was followed by Jermaine Holt in second-place at 47.12. Tyrell Valentine and Frederick Lewis took sixth and eighth-place after crossing the finish line at 48.09 and 49.72, respectively.
Mario Burke highlighted the 100-meter dash in a field that was six-deep with Cougars. Burke scorched the track and set a stadium and meet record after crossing the finish line at 9.95. The time is a career-best for Burke and is ranked second nationally.
Brandon Taylor posted a podium finish for Houston, taking third-place at 10.16. Travis Collins took fourth-place (10.21), Edward Sumler IV finished in fifth-place (10.22), Terence Ware placed sixth (10.30), and Jordan Booker completed the field for the Cougars in eighth-place (10.39). Houston walked away from the race with a staggering 29 points.
Freshman Christian Gilmore had a successful weekend, taking second-place in the men's 800-meter run and earning his first American Outdoor podium finish with a time of 1:50.93. Cameron Laverty finished the race in scoring position, taking sixth-place at 1:53.18.
Lattin reclaimed the 400-meter hurdle title after taking the top spot at 49.79, setting a meet record in the process. Lattin's time is ranked fifth nationally and is just shy of his lifetime best. With the victory Lattin becomes a three-time conference champion in the event.
Five men would appear in the 200-meter dash finals, led by Kahmari Montgomery who secured his second first-place finish of the day. Montgomery edged out defending champion and teammate Mario Burke to claim the title in the event with a time of 20.32, setting a stadium record. Burke trailed Montgomery by less than a second, crossing the finish line at 20.41 securing another podium finish. Jordan Booker (20.90), Edward Sumler IV (20.93) and Nicholas Alexander (21.37) took the fifth, sixth, and seventh scoring positions respectively.
With one of the biggest performances of the evening, senior Blake Contreras would secure an eighth-place finish in the men's 5000-meter run to score for the Cougars and give the men's squad a two-point lead heading into the final event of the championships. Contreras would earn the highest finish of his career when it mattered most, shaving nearly a minute off of his previous lifetime best and crossing the finish line at 14:41.79.
In the final event of the meet, Houston would further cement its lead as it took first-place in the 4x400-meter relay. The squad combined for a time of 3:08.58, leading wire-to-wire and winning by two seconds to take home the title for the fourth consecutive season.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
The Houston throwers continued to have a stellar weekend on the women's side as Hailey Pollard clinched a fifth-place finish in the discus. Pollard tossed a lifetime best 160-6 (48.93) on her third attempt to seal the deal.
Senior Britani Gonzales earned a trip to the medal stand after taking third-place in the 1500-meter run. The junior crossed the finish line at 4:30.46 to conclude her final outdoor championships on a high note.
Houston sophomore Naomi Taylor cruised to a first-place finish and outdoor title in the 100-meter hurdles. Taylor entered the race with the fastest time in the league this season and clocked a time of 13.17.
Ashley Seymour would highlight the 200-meter dash for the Cougar women as she earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 23.61.
