AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of Houston senior Matt Williams stood in a tie for seventh at 5-under 139 following the first day at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Saturday evening.
Williams opened the tournament with a 66 in the First Round, thanks to seven birdies, and followed with a 73 in the afternoon session on the 7,005-yard, par-72 course at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Starting his day off No. 1, the Calgary, Alberta, native opened with consecutive pars before sinking three straight birdies on Nos. 12-14. After six straight pars, Williams endured his lone bogey of the day on the par-4 third hole but rallied to make birdie on four of his final six holes to end the round.
As a team, the Cougars finished the first day in a tie for ninth with Virginia Tech and Notre Dame at 574. No. 3 Wake Forest held the first-day team lead at 547 with No. 7 Texas in second at 549. No. 37 Arkansas (557), No. 19 South Carolina (558) and host Augusta (567) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Sophomore Alexander Frances, freshman Braxton Watkins and junior Logan Young were tied for 38th at 145, while sophomore Andrew Gibson stood in 73rd at 157.
Wake Forest's Cameron Young stood atop the individual leaderboard at 128, while Arkansas's Tyson Reeder finished second at 34. No. 11 Cole Hammler stood in third at 136.
This marks the 13th straight season Houston has competed in the annual tournament hosted by Augusta (played under different names in the past).
Following Sunday's Final Round, the Cougars will take a late flight home to Houston on Monday evening. Earlier Monday, the team will enjoy the practice round at The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta.

PAIRINGS
For Sunday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Notre Dame and Northern Illinois
Gibson will start the day for the Cougars off No. 10 at 7:45 a.m. (CDT) with Young (7:55 a.m. CDT), Watkins (8:05 a.m. CDT), Frances (8:15 a.m. CDT) and Williams (8:25 a.m. CDT) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, the Cougars close out their regular season when they play host to the Bayou City Intercollegiate at Golf Crest Country Club in Pearland, Texas on April 15-16.
From there, Houston enters the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships on April 21-23 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
