PALM HARBOR, Fla. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program closed play at the American Athletic Conference Championships with a ninth-place finish on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrok Resort on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cougars posted their lowest team total of the 54-hole event with a score of 294 in the Final Round on the 7,125-yard, par-71 layout but were unable to rise higher in the final standings. Houston finished with a three-day total of 889.
Competing in his first American Athletic Conference Championships, sophomore Alexander Frances finished with a score of 220 and tied for 19th.
Also playing in his first postseason event, freshman Braxton Watkins fired the team's low round for the second time at the tournament with a 72 Tuesday and tied for 21st at 221. The Texarkana, Ark., native opened the Championships with a 72 Sunday.
Competing in his final event with the Cougars, senior Matt Williams tied for 28th at 222. Junior Zach Tracy tied for 34th at 226, while junior Logan Young tied for 40th at 229.
Memphis captured the team title with a score of 852 to finish 12 shots ahead of runner-up SMU. UCF finished third at 865 with No 38 USF (870), Temple (873), Cincinnati (878), UConn (878) and ECU (884) following.
SMU's McClure Meissner earned medalist honors with a score of 13-under 200 to finish six strokes ahead of Cincinnati's Austin Squires.
