PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Competing in his first American Athletic Conference Championships, freshman Braxton Watkins posted a score of 1-over- 72 to tie for 11th lead the University of Houston Men's Golf program following the First Round on Sunday afternoon.
Starting his day off No. 1 on the 7,125-yard, par-71 Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Resort, Watkins overcame a double bogey on the par-4 sixth hole draining his first birdie of the day on No. 7.
The Texarkana, Texas, native added two more birdies on his back nine on the way to his 72.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 297 to finish the first day in ninth.
SMU held the First-Round lead at 285 to finish one stroke ahead of Memphis. No. 38 USF (290), Temple (291), UCF (291), Wichita State (292), Cincinnati (296) and UConn (296) rounded out the Top-Eight leaders with ECU (299) in 10th.
Competing in his third American Championships, senior Matt Williams was tied for 22nd at 74, while sophomore Alexander Frances was tied for 29th at 75. Junior Zach Tracy was tied for 36th at 76, while junior Logan Young was tied for 43rd at 77.
SMU's McClure Meissner fired a 5-under 66 to hold the individual lead after 18 holes. USF's Albin Bergstrom stood in second at 69, while Yannik Emmert (Wichita State), Bobby Bai (UCF), Brad Bawden (Memphis), and Kyle Tate (UCF) were tied for third at 70.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
Monday's Second Round begins at 6:30 a.m. (CDT). The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from ECU, beginning at 6:51 a.m. (CDT).
