Houston quartet owns nation’s No. 1 relay in early outdoor season
HOUSTON – The two-time defending NCAA champions in the 4x100-meter relay, the Houston men's relay was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Â
The honor comes after the quartet of Nicholas Alexander, Mario Burke, Brandon Taylor and Travis Collins clocked a time of 38.82 at last Thursday's Houston Spring Break Invitational. The time is the second-quickest time ever run by a collegiate team this early in the season.
Â
This is the first time that Houston received a National Athlete of the Week honor during the outdoor season and the first time that an NCAA DI men's relay team took home accolades.
Â
Showing its depth just two days later, Houston rolled out another 4x100 relay that clocked the nation's No. 4 time as Alexander, Trent McDonald, Terence Ware and Edward Sumler IV rolled to a win in a time of 39.60.
Â
UP NEXT
Houston returns action this weekend with athletes attending the Victor Lopez Classic on Friday and Saturday at Rice, and select relays attending the Prairie View Relays on Saturday.
