PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston Men's Golf junior Logan Young finished with a score of 215 to lead the Cougars and tie for 37th at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian National Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
With the threat of severe weather, coaches elected to play 36 holes Monday on the 6,921-yard, par-71 course to avoid the wet weather. While most of the tournament was completed, play was halted late in the Final Round due to darkness.
Student-athletes from Duke and USF will return to the course at 7 a.m. (CDT), Tuesday to finish their rounds and complete the tournament.
Young posted an even-par 71 in the Second Round and drained three birdies in the Final Round to lead Houston.
As a team, the Cougars finished 13th with a score of 863. No. 6 Wake Forest took home the team title with a score of 827 to finish six strokes ahead of No. 13 Auburn. No. 31 South Carolina (836), No. 1 Oklahoma State (838) and No. 3 Vanderbilt (841) completed the Top Five.
The tournament featured one of the nation's elite collegiate fields with 14 of the 15 teams ranked among the Top-50 leaders.
Sophomore Alexander Frances finished tied for 43rd at 217, while senior Matt Williams tied for 55th at 220. Freshman Braxton Watkins tied for 63rd at 222 with junior Zach Tracy tying for 72nd with 224.
Tracy shot the Cougars' low round of the day with a 69 in the Final Round, thanks to five birdies, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 6-7.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Andrew Gibson tied for 63rd 222, while Cavner finished 82nd at 244.
Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff earned medalist honors at 14-under 199 to finish one stroke ahead of Florida State's John Pak. Texas A&M's Chandler Philips (201) and Wake Forest's Cameron Young (205) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Fans should note that the tournament will not be finalized until the remaining student-athletes have completed their final rounds. If inclement weather prevents the Final Round from being completed, the tournament's results after 36 holes will be final.
