Jarreau recognized as league’s Sixth Man of the Year; Robinson receives Sportsmanship Award
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Basketball stars DeJon Jarreau and Galen Robinson Jr. were the latest Cougars to be honored with American Athletic Conference postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon.
Jarreau was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year, while Robinson received the conference's Sportsmanship Award.
In his first season with the Cougars, Jarreau has made an immediate impact. The sophomore guard ranks third on the team with 9.2 points per game and is averaging 3.3 assists per contest.
After missing seven of the first eight games, Jarreau returned to Houston's lineup against LSU on Dec. 12 and has competed in every game since.
The New Orleans native has recorded 10 double-digit scoring games this season, including a season-high 18 points in a road win at UConn on Feb. 14. He posted the team's first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Temple inside the Fertitta Center on Jan. 31.
Jarreau ranks 12th in The American with 3.3 assists per game and is 10th with a 1.5 assist-turnover ratio.
Jarreau became the second Cougar to receive the Sixth Man of the Year honor in as many years after guard Armoni Brooks collected the accolade in 2017-18.
Robinson is the Cougar's lone four-year letterman on the 2018-19 roster and has enjoyed a distinguished career. The Houston native and Westbury Christian product has competed in all 130 games of his collegiate career to date with 113 starts and is the second-winningest player in school history with 99 victories.
He ranks fourth in Houston career history with 554 assists and will finish his collegiate career as The American's all-time leader in that category.
Off the court, Robinson has served as an ambassador for the University of Houston and the game of basketball. During his career, he has met and signed autographs for Buddy Basketball team members, assisted in the organization and distribution of supplies to local relief groups following Hurricane Harvey, talked with students about the importance of reading during the NCAA Read to the Final Four Literacy Program at Blackshear Elementary School and served Thanksgiving lunches to Star of Hope mission residents, among others.
He will graduate in May with his degree in health.
These were only the latest postseason awards for Houston. On Monday, senior guard Corey Davis Jr. was named to the All-American Athletic Conference First Team, while junior guard Armoni Brooks earned a place on the Second Team. In addition, guard Nate Hinton was named to the All-Freshman Team.
USF guard LaQuincy Rideau was named Defensive Player of the Year, while Josh Carlton (UConn) and Nate Pierre-Louis (Temple) shared the Most Improved Player honor.
The league's Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Freshman of the Year will be announced Wednesday.
