Houston clocks world’s fourth-fastest relay time
CLEMSON, S.C. – Houston's men 4x400-meter relay closed out the weekend with a top-notch win on Saturday at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational.
The winning time of 3:01.51 is the second-fastest time in American history and the fourth fastest in world history. The time trails only the times run by USC (3:00.77), Texas A&M (3:01.39) and Florida (3:01.43) ran at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
With all four runners of American descent, only Texas A&M (3:01.39) lays claim to a faster American relay than the time clocked by Houston on Saturday. Houston's time also snapped the Clemson University Indoor Complex record and shaved over two seconds off the previous Houston program record.
Brianne Bethel moved up to No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference in the 200-meter dash with a personal best of 23.45.
The women's 4x400 relay of Bethel, Jazmyn Tilford-Rutherford, Payge Side and Birexus Hawkins finished with a time of 3:35.10 to take the top spot in The American this season and become the fourth-fastest relay in UH history, and the fastest since 2006.
Meredith Sorensen ran the fifth-fastest time in UH history in the 3,000-meter run with a personal best of 9:54.49.
Cameron Laverty set a season-best in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.37 which kept him in the lead spot of The American.
Nicholas Alexander set a personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.38 and jumped up to tie for sixth in The American this season.
