SPRING, Texas – University of Houston Men's Golf senior Matt Williams shot a 70 during the First Round of the Colin Montgomerie Invitational and was tied for fifth at 2-under before play was suspended due to darkness.

The Second Round will resume Tuesday morning with the Final Round immediately following.

The Cougars stood in fourth at 5-over par before play was halted. Florida Gulf Coast and North Dakota State were tied for the lead at even par. Prairie View A&M (+3) and California Baptist (+6) completed the Top Five.

Stetson's Baylor Payne led all players at 5-under. Laurence Crea (Prairie View A&M) and Florida Gulf Coast teammates Tate Heintzelman and Van Holmgren were tied for second at 3-under. Williams was joined by Florida Gulf Coast teammates Andrew Potter and Chase Bigham and Max Hellstrom (New Orleans) in a tie for fifth at 2-under.

Williams endured a bogey on No. 3 in his second hole of the day to start the tournament, but that would be the only blemish on his scorecard. He rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 and picked up another on his No. 18.

Starting the Second Round on No. 2, Williams began the afternoon session with a birdie on the par-5 second hole and added another on No. 4.

Sophomore Alexander Frances and junior Zach Tracy each recorded an eagle during their first round of play. Frances was tied for 12^that even-par, while Gardner was tied 16^that 1-over.

Freshman Braxton Watkins was tied for 19^that 2-over and opened the tournament with a 70 in the First Round.

Junior Zach Tracy and sophomore Andrew Gibson were tied for 39^that 6-over, while juniors Alex Isakson and Logan Young were tied for 51^stat 7-over.

UP NEXT
Following the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, the Cougars will compete at the Cabo Collegiate on March 3-5 at Querencia Golf Club in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

From there, the team will host the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, on March 11-12.
