Bethel & Valencia Named Athletes of the Week

Houston duo claim titles to close out the Indoor season
HOUSTON – Houston junior sprinter Brianne Bethel and senior thrower Felipe Valencia earned The American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors for their performances in last week's Aggie Twilight, the league announced Tuesday.
Tuesday's honor was Bethel's first weekly honor of the season as she clocked the fourth-fastest 400-meter dash in UH history with a time of 54.29 and shot up to No. 4 in The American Saturday night.
Valencia's winning throw of 59-4.75 (18.10m) gave him his third shot put win of the season. The American's No. 1 athlete in the shot put, Valencia defeated the competition Saturday by three feet, breaking his own meet record in the process. Tuesday's honor was also Valencia's first weekly honor of the season.
Bethel and Valencia's honors give Houston a seventh week claiming at least one American Athlete of the Week honor, following Obi Igbokwe, Taylor Scaife, Kahmari Montgomery, Mario Burke, Lagarious McQuirter and Naomi Taylor.
