NEW ORLEANS – University of Houston Women's Golf junior Amanda Elich fired a 1-under 71 to lead the Cougars and tie for seventh following the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship.

Despite starting her day with two bogeys on her first three holes, the West, Linn., Ore., native rallied to post the team's low score of the day. Elich enjoyed birdies on No. 5 and No. 9 and rallied from a bogey on No. 10 with another birdie on No. 11.

After alternating bogey-birdie on Nos. 14-17, Elich capped her day with a par on No. 18.

As a team, the Cougars stood in seventh with a score of 296. No. 3 Texas held the first-day lead at 285 with No. 5 Duke (286), No. 1 USC (289), No 16 South Carolina (294), NC State (295) and No. 8 Florida (295) among the Top-Six leaders.

No. 27 Michigan State (297), Oklahoma State (297) and No. 11 Auburn (298) rounded out the Top 10.

Individually, No. 56 Ana Belac (Duke) held the First-Round lead with a 68. She was followed by Monika Hartl (NC State), No. 32 Hailee Cooper (Texas) and No. 24 Amelia Garvey (USC) in a tie for second with 69s with Valery Plata (Michigan State), and Maddie Luitwieler (Texas) tied for fifth at 70.

Senior All-American Leonie Harm and freshman Hannah Screen each fired a 74 to tie for 24^th.Senior Tatiana Pineda was tied for 64^th with a 77, while senior Yuka Kajiki ended her day tied for 87^th with an 83.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
Monday's Second Round begins at 9 a.m. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Michigan State and Oklahoma State.

Kajiki begins the day for the Cougars at 9 a.m., off No. 1 with Pineda (9:08 a.m.), Screen (9:16 a.m.), Harm (9:24 a.m.) and Elich (9:32 a.m.) following.

Following the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, the Cougars return home to play host to the ICON Invitational at The Woodlands Country Club in Woodlands on Feb. 25-26.
