Game vs. Northwestern State slated for 6:30 p.m. start
HOUSTON -- Two-time MLB All-Star and Gold Glove winner Michael Bourn will throw out the first pitch ahead of the University of Houston Baseball team's Opening Day matchup with Northwestern State on Friday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
A 2001-03 letterwinner at Houston, Bourn was a two-time All-Conference USA selection. The Houston native led the Cougars in stolen bases all three years and still ranks second all-time in program history with 90 stolen bases and third with 167 runs scored.
In 2001, Bourn set the freshman stolen base record with 35, a mark that still ranks second all-time in a single season regardless of year classification. For his efforts that season, he was named a Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Honorable Mention All-American.
After his junior campaign, Bourn was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Fourth Round of the 2003 MLB Draft. He played for Philadelphia (2006-07), Houston Astros (2008-11), Atlanta Braves (2011-12, 2015), Cleveland Indians (2013-15), Arizona Diamondbacks (2016) and Baltimore Orioles (2016).
In 2011, Bourn led the MLB with 61 stolen bases. In total, he led the National League in stolen bases three times (61 – 2009, 52 – 2010, 61 – 2011).
Bourn was also member of the 2006 Team USA National Team.
