Freshman middle blocker earns Honorable Mention nod from Volleyballmag.com
HOUSTON – University of Houston Volleyball freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos was named to the Volleyballmag.com's Freshman All-America Honorable Mention.
Â
Tullos completed her rookie campaign as one of the best blockers in the nation, ranking third in the country with 185 total blocks. Her 62 solo stops at the net also were more than all Division I players, with the next closest being 42.
Â
During American Athletic Conference play, the Lantana, Texas, native led the league in nearly every blocking category including blocks per set (1.55), total blocks (107) and solo blocks (32). She finished second with 75 block assists.
Â
Against Cincinnati (Oct. 20), Tullos put together a performance of the ages, having recorded 17 blocks, which not only set a conference record for blocks in a five-set match but also was the most blocks in a single match by a Division I player this season. As a result of her performance, Tullos was named The American Defensive Player of the Week, the only non-libero to earn the honor this season.
Â
She also found herself tally four double-digit blocking outings, including one in the season-opener against Arizona State and one against Memphis, which resulted in the first double-double of her career.
Â
Tullos was one of two members from the conference to land a spot, joining Tulsa's Dilara Gedikoglu.
