Senior punter leads conference in punting average this season
HOUSTON – Houston senior punter Dane Roy was named The American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Roy punted eight times at Tulsa, averaging 44.4 yards per attempt against the Golden Hurricane. A semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, six of Roy's eight punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. He also recorded three punts of 50 yards or more in the win.
For the season, Roy ranks first in The American and is seventh among all FBS players in punting average (46.9). That mark is on pace to set the program record held by Richie Leone (45.5) from 2012.
Due to Roy's efforts, Houston is second nationally in net punting (43.9) this season. The senior has recorded 30 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and 22 punts that have traveled 50-plus yards.
Houston returns to action Saturday as it hosts No. 23/24/24 Navy inside TDECU Stadium with kickoff set for 6 p.m. CT. Tickets are available here. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
