Senior is the first UH punter to be a finalist for the award
HOUSTON – University of Houston senior punter Dane Roy was named one of the three finalists for the 2019 Ray Guy Award on Monday presented by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is given annually to the nation's top punter.
Roy ranks first in The American and is seventh nationally with a 46.9 yards per punt average. The Bunyip, Australia, native has had 21 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and leads the conference with 19 punts that have traveled for 50-plus yards.
Roy's 46.9 yards per punt average in 2019 would set a Houston single-season record, breaking the mark held by former Cougar Richie Leonie (45.5) in 2012.
The senior has helped Houston to a net punting average of 43.9 yards per punt, which ranks second in FBS. Only two of Roy's 54 punts have been recorded as touchbacks.
A team captain, Roy has appeared in 49 games and ranks first in school history with 223 punts for 9,874 yards. He was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List in 2018 and 2019.
He is the first UH punter to be named a finalist for the award. Roy was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Named after former Southern Miss and Oakland Raider punter Ray Guy, the award will be presented on Dec. 12 at the Home Depot College Football Award Show in Atlanta. The awards show will be televised on ESPN at 6 p.m. CT.
