HOUSTON – Houston student-athletes received the unique experience recently of meeting various professionals from across the state of Texas, also explore and solidify internships to gain experience during their college career and job leads for full-time employment after graduation.
Hosted by the UH Student-Athlete Career Development office, the two-hour career fair allowed UH student-athletes the chance to meet and connect with various business leaders and companies that fit their career path for after their college graduation.
"As a student-athlete at the University of Houston, we are provided with opportunities to succeed further than what we accomplish in our athletic careers," volleyball senior Katie Karbo said. "To be provided with the Career Development Center's resources is an amazing opportunity for all of us."
Houston's Student-Athlete Development office has spent the fall semester working with upperclassmen student-athletes to help strengthen their resume, conducting workshops on writing strong cover letters and how to build their personal identity and brand to potential employers.

"This event is about enhancing the skills and putting into practice the various skills our upperclassmen have learned throughout the semester through our weekly Power Hours (career development workshops) when it comes to exploring their career options, effective networking and professional communication, and securing ideal work experiences", Director of Career Development Asha Sowell said. "An event like this allows our student-athletes to be exposed to a wide variety of potential employers and gain insight from professionals on what is it like to join the work force in today's business climate."
Over 65 student-athletes had an opportunity to network with various businesses that ranged from local school districts, financial service providers and job recruitment services.
Companies and organizations that participated in the event included the Houston Texans, Eli Lilly, AXA Advisors, Northwestern Mutual, Lifetime Fitness and several other employers from the business, education and financial sectors.
