NASSAU, Bahamas – For the third straight day, University of Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard fired a round in the 60s to lead the Cougars during the Final Round of the White Sands Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at Ocean Club.
Fredgaard drained five birdies with only one bogey to finish second with a score of 11-under 205 on the 6,415-yard, par-72 layout.
With her total, Fredgaard set a Houston record for 54-hole tournament low. She topped the previous low of 207, set by two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Leonie Harm at the MountainView Collegiate on March 10-12, 2017.
Starting her day on No. 5, the Asserbo, Denmark, native drained five consecutive pars before beginning her birdie barrage. Fredgaard sank three straight birdies on Nos. 10-12 and, following two pars, added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15-16.
Despite her lone bogey of the day on the par-4 17th hole, Fredgaard finished the tournament with five straight pars on the way to a career-best finish. It was her third Top-10 finish during the fall campaign and topped her previous best showing of eighth-place at the season-opening Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 21-23.
As a team, the Cougars posted their lowest round of the tournament in Wednesday's play at 4-under 284 and finished fourth with a score of 866.
No. 3 Texas captured the team title with a score of 828, while No. 17 Arkansas finished second at 857. No. 3 Oklahoma finished third at 858 with No. 48 Tennessee (867), North Texas (870), No. 27 Baylor (871), No. 31 Clemson (873), No. 34 Georgia (873) and No. 21 Mississippi State (874) rounding out the Top 10.
The tournament's 14-team field featured 10 of the nation's Top-50 programs, including five of the Top 25.
Senior Brooke McDougald lowered her score for the second straight day and tied for 21st at 218, while senior Amanda Elich – competing as an individual – tied for 41st at 222.
Sophomore Hannah Screen tied for 48th at 223, while sophomore Annie Kim finished in a tie for 59th at 225. Junior Ariana Saenz finished 81st at 239.
Texas' Sophie Guo earned medalist honors with a score of 199, while teammate Sara Kouskova finished third at 209.
