NASSAU, Bahamas – The University of Houston Women's Golf program stood in third place following the First Round of the White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club on Monday afternoon.
Freshman Karen Fredgaard tied her collegiate career low with a 68 to tie for second, while sophomore Hannah Screen was tied for fourth at 69 to lead the Cougars.
The 24th-ranked Cougars posted a score of 1-under 287 to join three teams under par through the first 18 holes on the 6,415-yard, par-72 course.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament features an elite field with five Top-25 teams and five Top-50 squads. No. 3 Texas held the first-day lead at 276, while No, 17 Arkansas was in second at 283.
No. 31 Clemson (288), No. 34 Georgia (289), No. 27 Baylor (291), No. 25 Ohio State (293). No. 21 Mississippi State (294), No. 41 Oklahoma (295) and North Texas (295) completed the Top-11.
Fredgaard began her day with a birdie on No. 2 but returned to even par with a bogey on the next hole. Fortunately, that would be the final blemish on her scorecard.
The Asserbo, Denmark, native returned to red numbers with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole and added three more birdies on the back nine. She equaled her career low set during the second round of the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 20.
Starting her day off No. 1, Screen began her day with five straight birdies before making birdies on No. 6 and No. 9 to cap her front nine. The Berkhamsted, U.K., native drained three consecutive birdies on Nos. 11-13 before enduring back-to-back bogeys on No. 16-17.
Sophomore Annie Kim and senior Brooke McDougald were tied for 42nd at 75, while junior Ariana Saenz stood in 82nd at 85. Competing as an individual, senior Amanda Elich was tied for 53rd at 76.
No. 19 Sophie Guo (Texas) fired a 66 in Monday's play to hold the individual lead. Fredgaard joined Gracyn Burgess (Clemson) in a tie for second, while Screen joined No. 28 Caterina Don (Georgia), No. 58 Sara Kouskova (Texas) and Ela Anacona (Arkansas) in a tie for fourth.
Following the women's tournament, Houston Men's Golf will host the White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club, beginning Friday morning.
