Freshman middle blocker set conference record with 17 blocks on Sunday
HOUSTON – After setting a conference record with 17 blocks against Cincinnati, University of Houston freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Â
Tullos was the first non-libero this season to win The American Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
She began the week with three blocks against ECU to help pace the Cougars to a five-set, comeback victory. She followed that performance with one for the ages, as her 17 blocks vs. Cincinnati not only set a conference record for blocks in a five-set match but also was the most blocks in a single match by a Division I player this season.
Â
Her standout performance at the net marked just the fourth time since 2014 that a Division I player recorded 17 blocks in a five-set match. Tullos' five solo blocks against the Bearcats are the most amongst those four performances.
Â
In total, Tullos posted 20 stops at the net in her two matches. She averaged 2.0 blocks per set across 10 sets played.
Â
The award marks the first of Tullos' career, as the Cougars have now earned four American Player of the Week accolades this season. This is the first time in program history Houston has had four different players earn a conference Player of the Week honor in a season.
Â
The Cougars are also the only school in The American to have four different players earn a conference Player of the Week award. Earlier this year, senior libero Katie Karbo earned Defensive Player of the Week, while senior outside hitter Megan Duncan and freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson received Offensive Player of the Week honors.
UP NEXT
Houston hits the road for a pair of matches in the Sunshine State as the Cougars travel to Florida and square up with UCF on Friday, followed by a match with USF on Sunday.
Â
The Cougars return home for a four-match swing on Nov. 1 when Houston hosts Tulsa. Tickets for that match are on sale now and can be purchased here.
