
Houston Takes Win over UConn on Saturday

Receiver Jeremy Singleton leads all with 103 yards
Making the first start of his career, freshman Logan Holgorsen threw for 123 passing yards and a touchdown, while junior running back Kyle Porter added 68 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore defensive back Grant Stuard made a career-high 15 tackles, including six solo stops, to lead the Cougars on defense, while sophomore linebacker Donavan Mutin recorded the first interception of his career , leading to the Cougars' first touchdown of the day.
With the win, Houston improved to 3-4 and 1-2 in American West play. UConn dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in American East play.
After both teams traded punts to open the game, the Cougars put the first mark on the scoreboard on junior kicker Dalton Witherspoon's 42-yard field goal with 9:44 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Bryson Smith put the Cougars into scoring possession with a 45-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Singleton to the UConn 18.
The score remained that way until Matt Drayton hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jack Zergiotis with 13:41 left in the second quarter for a 7-3 UConn lead.
The Cougars regained the lead on Porter's 12-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the first half. Houston took advantage of Mutin's first career interception and 38-yard return to start the scoring drive on the Huskies' 30-yard line.
UConn tied the game at 10-10 on Clayton Harris' 43-yard field goal with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.
However, it did not stay that way long. Holgorsen connected with Singleton on a 58-yard touchdown strike down the left sideline for a 17-10 Houston lead with 3:31 left in the third quarter.
The Cougars made it a two-score game late when Smith plunged into the end zone from two yards out for a 24-10 Houston lead with 3:19 left.
On the ensuing possession, UConn moved to within 24-17 after Art Thompkins caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jack Zergiotis with 1:40 left in the game.
The Huskies attempted an onside kick, but the effort went out of bounds, giving the Cougars the ball on the UConn 37 with 1:40 left.

The Cougars face a short week when they return to action to face American Athletic Conference rival No. 19/19 SMU at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, inside TDECU Stadium in Houston.
