Houston skipper has led Cougars to five titles in last five seasons
HOUSTON -- Winner of five American Athletic Conference titles in the last five years, University of Houston Baseball Head Coach Todd Whitting has signed a contract extension through the 2023 season, Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman announced Monday.
"Todd has established himself as one of the premier coaches in the nation, and there is no better program for him to lead than his alma mater," Pezman said. "We are excited for the future as Todd and his program continue to push the University of Houston to new levels of competition."
Entering his ninth year at the helm, Whitting led Houston to its second straight regular-season crown in The American in 2018. The Cougars finished 38-25 overall, their sixth 30-plus-win season under Whitting, and 16-8 in league play while earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
"I am very appreciative of Chairman Tilman Fertitta, the UH Board of Regents, Dr. Renu Khator and our Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman for this opportunity and the ongoing support of our program," Whitting said. "I have been very fortunate over the past eight seasons to have a hard working and talented staff, great players and a wonderful family that is fully invested in UH Baseball. Our success over the past eight seasons is a direct result of the major commitment made by the UH administration, our loyal supporters and passionate fans. This support has allowed us to win five championships, host two NCAA Regionals, and substantially upgrade Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park in recent years.
"I look forward to the 2019 season and the opportunity to coach a tremendous group of players that understand and embrace the expectations of playing baseball at UH."
The 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Whitting has guided the Cougars to four NCAA Regional appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018) and one Super Regional berth (2014). He is 288-196-1 at the helm of the Cougars.
Named the ABCA South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2017, Whitting has tutored Cougars to 34 All-Conference honors, including back-to-back American Pitcher of the Year award winners in Trey Cumbie (2017) and Aaron Fletcher (2018).
Andrew Lantrip (2015), Joe Davis (2016), Jake Scheiner (2017) and Cumbie (2017) all earned All-America honors under Whitting's tutelage. In 2017 Scheiner became the first Cougar to be named a consensus All-American since Brad Lincoln in 2006, garnering postseason honors from all six publications/organizations.
The Cougars have also received 13 All-Region honors under Whitting. In 2018, Davis (First Team) and Cumbie (Second Team) were named ABCA/Rawlings Central All-Region, marking the sixth straight season Houston has had at least one player named to an All-Region team.
