Irvine records her fifth double-double of the season
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Sophomore setter Abby Irvine tallied her fifth double-double of the season on Sunday, but her efforts were not enough, as the Houston Volleyball team fell to Cincinnati in straight sets (16-25, 17-25, 8-25).
Heading into the third weekend of conference play, Houston sits at 13-6 on the season and 0-4 against league opponents.
GAME 1: HOUSTON 0, CINCINNATI 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Houston managed to keep pace with Cincinnati to begin the match, finding itself no more than three points behind the Bearcats. After trailing for much of the set, the Cougars clawed their way back into it and tied the score at 13. The Bearcats responded though, immediately scoring four unanswered points and carried that momentum to the 25-16 set victory.
Set 2
After the Cougars found themselves within striking distance to start the second frame, the Bearcats strung together a 6-2 run to take a 12-8 lead and force Houston to call a timeout. That four-point cushion proved to be all that Cincinnati needed in route to its 25-17 set win and 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
Cincinnati came out from intermission firing on all cylinders, building a lead too large for Houston to overcome, as the Bearcats won the final frame 25-8 to seal the 3-0 match victory.
