D'Eriq King posts career highs with 6 total TDs and 431 passing yards
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior quarterback D'Eriq King threw for a career-high 431 yards and accounted for a career-best six touchdowns, but it would not be enough as Texas Tech claimed a 63-49 win inside Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore wide receiver Marquez Stevenson hauled in nine catches for 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while junior wide receiver Keith Corbin added seven receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
Houston jumped out to a 21-14 lead in the first quarter, the second straight game in which the Cougars posted that many points in the initial period. King connected with wide receiver Raelon Singleton on an 18-yard strike to tie the game at 7-7 and gave the Cougars a 14-7 lead on a 57-yard touchdown pass to Stevenson.
After the Red Raiders tied the game at 14-14 with 65 seconds remaining in the first period, King and Stevenson connected just 32 second later on a 79-yard touchdown strike.
The two teams went back and forth from there with neither squad building more than seven-point lead.
Senior running back Terence Williams tied the game at 35-35 after a 31-yard touchdown scamper for the first touchdown of his career in a Houston uniform. On its ensuing possession, the Red Raiders grabbed a 42-35 lead on running back Ta'Zhawn Henry's 19-yard score.
After the Texas Tech defense forced a Houston punt, the Red Raiders drove 80 yards and built a 49-35 advantage on Henry's 13-yard touchdown with 7:46 left in the game.
Houston pulled to within a touchdown at 49-42 when King hit sophomore wide receiver Keith Corbin on a 9-yard touchdown with 1:47 left, but Henry's 1-yard touchdown run and a 33-yard touchdown from Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman to Antoine Wesley proved to be too much of a deficit.
After accounting for four touchdown passes and a rushing score against Arizona last weekend, King added one more TD pass while becoming the 10th player in school history to record a 400-yard passing game.
His passing yardage total was almost 100 more yards than his previous high of 330 set against American Athletic Conference rival ECU on Nov. 4, 2017.
The Manvel, Texas, native now has 12 touchdown passes in 2018, a year after all Houston signal callers combined to throw for 16 touchdowns.
Williams led the Cougars with 61 rushing yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 605 yards and five touchdowns on 43-pf-59 passing. Antoine Wesley led the Red Raiders with 261 yards and three touchdowns on three receptions, while Ja'Deion added 120 yards off seven catches.
Henry led all players with 111 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries.

The Cougars return to the friendly confines of TDECU Stadium when they meet Texas Southern at 7 p.m., Saturday.
